(Amherst, NY) – The Buffalo Junior Sabres returned home after a tough road loss to Oakville and stings still felt from the overtime loss to Hamilton last week. Buffalo grabbed an early lead and prevented a late surge by Milton from erasing that lead, as the Junior Sabres downed the Icehawks, 6-3.
Tim Kielich opened the scoring about five minutes into the first period, followed about six minutes later by Mark Arnone. Both goals were scored on the power play. Jonas Frederiksson, moved up to forward from defense, scored his first goal in a Buffalo uniform to give Buffalo a 3-1 lead.
Rocky Gruttadauria (shorthanded) and Nick Berst added their own goals for Buffalo, while Milton’s Kyle Cecchetto led his side with two goals. Penalties were aplenty, and as of Tuesday the Jr. Sabres were awaiting word from the OJHL on suspensions to players David Seward and Larry Smith for their roles in some late-game altercations.
The Jr. Sabres next travel to Milton on Friday night for the rematch, followed by a Saturday night visit to Burlington.
