Jr. Sabres close September with 5-2 win

AMHERST – Rookie Nathan Black’s first-ever goal in Junior A hockey proved to be the game winner as the Buffalo Junior Sabres skated to a 5-2 win Monday night over the Georgetown Raiders at the Northtown Center at Amherst.
The Raiders scored first at the 9:38 mark of the first period, with Liam Board getting the goal.
Buffalo responded with the next four goals, beginning with Nick Smith’s second goal of the season at the 13:40 mark of the first, assisted by Josh Gabriel.
Darren McCormick (in photo) scored the go-ahead goal on the power play at the 7:26 mark of the second period, assisted by Pat Egan. Black’s goal then came unassisted at the 12:07 mark of the second.
Nick DeSimone increased the lead to 4-1 in favor of Buffalo at the 8:48 mark of the third period, assisted by Nolan Sheeran.
The Raiders got one back on the power play with 5:28 left in the third, scored by Richard Court. Buffalo got the last goal when, with Georgetown’s net emptied for an extra skater, Michael Ederer picked the puck off the stick of a Georgetown defenseman and coasted in to score his fifth goal of the season, unassisted.
Jr. Sabres goaltender Joseph Pianta stopped 23 shots for his fifth win of the season.
The Jr. Sabres (5-1-1 OTL) next host the Newmarket Hurricanes at the Northtown Center at Amherst on Wednesday, October 2 beginning at 7:30 p.m.
