BUFFALO BEATS BURLINGTON IN OT

The Buffalo Jr. Sabres captured a thrilling victory on Wednesday night, besting the Burlington Cougars 5-4 in overtime at LECOM Harborcenter.

The two teams combined for six goals in the second period and 82 shots overall.

The Jr. Sabres took an early lead on the Cougars, as Logan Tobias scored just 2:10 in. Buffalo held the lead for a short time, until Burlington’s Matthew Giannini scored the tying goal near the midway point of the first period.

Giannini added his second of the night early in the second period, scoring just 1:27 in to give the Cougars their first lead of the evening. Just over six minutes later, Joel Holtrop doubled Burlington’s lead.

Buffalo, however, wasted no time in rallying back. Beau Fixari scored on a rocket of a shot just 44 seconds later. Nate Berke, who recently gained an “A” on his jersey after being named an alternate captain, tied the game later in the period.

To their credit, the Cougars quickly regained their lead. Ethan Grant scored just 1:24 after Berke’s goal to make it 4-3 in favor of Burlington. But just as quickly, Tobias scored his second of the night about two minutes later to tie the game once more.

A scoreless third period was followed by five minutes of 4-on-4 overtime. Burlington dominated the first overtime period, but was unable to capitalize. The teams headed to 3-on-3 overtime, and it took the Jr. Sabres 3:28 to find the back of the net.

Colby Seitz recorded the overtime, game-winning goal off a feed from Logan Tobias.
