Five Junior Sabres suspended

(Amherst, NY) – The Buffalo Junior Sabres may have won the game (a 2-0 victory over Burlington Monday night) but they’ve lost the services of several players for at least one game.

Third period penalties stemming from a line brawl and a major hit from behind penalty results in five members of the Junior Sabres sitting out at least one game, thus thinning Buffalo’s roster as it prepares to travel to Stouffville Thursday to face the Spirit.

Jacob Ledyard, Joe Johnson and Rocfky Gruttadauria were all slapped with one-game bans for their roles in the line brawl at the 14:15 mark of the third period, while Ryan Stayner was suspended for two games.  Larry Smith will also serve a two-game suspension for his checking from behind major penalty at the 16:09 mark of the third.

Four Burlington players are also suspended:  Austin Kosack, Adam Hughes and Jeremy Laing will sit out one game while Dan Lomas faces a five-game suspension.  While Lomas was penalized with a spearing major that triggered the melee, video replays indicate it was Kosack who poked Buffalo’s Ryan Stayner with his stick to touch off the fisticuffs.  It was unknown as of Tuesday morning whether the league would adjust suspensions based on video evidence available from the webcast of this game.
